Buyer's Guide

At Select Sheds, we have garden sheds available in a variety of styles, and made from a variety of materials. Our wood, metal, plastic, vinyl, and resin sheds are all a great value, and each material has its own unique benefits. Here, we'll help you choose the right material for your shed, to fit your needs.

Wood

Wood sheds are extremely popular, as they are the most customizable, and often the most attractive. However, they are also the most expensive and the most high maintenance. At Select Sheds, we have some beautiful wooden garden sheds for sale with many accessories to really make it your own. With additions like flower boxes, cupolas and weathervanes, they make for a stunning addition to your yard. Wood is also very sturdy, but it is prone to weathering, insects, mold, mildew, and other problems, so you really have to keep an eye on your maintenance. If you don't mind maintaining your garden shed, though, wood sheds are a classic, high quality choice.

Metal

Metal is the least expensive material that garden sheds are made of, and they also have some great benefits. For one, metal tends to be strong and secure, so you don't have to worry about a gust of wind coming and blowing your shed down. If you go with a steel shed, it is also UV resistant, meaning that it isn't going to fade or crack under the sun's rays. It is also recyclable, and is easier to produce than other materials, so it is more environmentally friendly. At Select Sheds, we have steel sheds with extra coating for extra protection. The three kinds of coating we carry are:

  • Electro Galvanized Steel - Steel alone can be vulnerable to rust and corrosion. Electro galvanized steel, on the other hand, has a layer of zinc bonded to it using electricity, to help protect the steel from the elements.
  • HDG Steel - Steel that is treated with a Hot Dipped Galvanization process is dipped into molten zinc, for a thick coating that will do great protecting against insects, rot, and weather.
  • Vinyl Coated Steel - With vinyl coated steel, you get all the benefits of strong steel construction, along with the amazing corrosion protection that you get with vinyl. Vinyl-coated steel actually gives you a coating five times thicker than most standard steel buildings.

Vinyl, Plastic & Resin

If you want the least amount of maintenance in your shed kit, then you need one made of vinyl, plastic, or resin. Like steel, vinyl is recyclable and eco-friendly. However, unlike steel, it doesn't need a coating to protect it from harsh weather. You won't ever have to repaint it, and you don't have to worry about rotting, corrosion, fading, or any other form of destruction. If you live in a climate with high amounts of rainfall, a plastic, resin, or vinyl shed is the best option for you. However, these materials can contract and expand in areas with extreme temperatures. Our vinyl sheds are fire resistant, for extra safety and durability. Plastic and resin are both polymers. The difference is that while plastic comes from petrochemicals, resin is natural, and formed mostly from plants, making it more environmentally friendly and sustainable than plastic. If you're looking for something that's more lightweight and mid-priced, vinyl, plastic, or resin might be a good option for you. It's also a great option if you are looking for storage sheds that you can easily relocate and move around your yard. Plus, they are often the easiest to put together.
